Goals of the Center

IC-RIVERS assesses the impacts of climate change and develops adaptation strategies to create long-term solutions for protecting large river systems. The center supports the international Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs, Agenda 2030) by providing scientifically sound foundations for water policy decisions. It also works to make scientific information more accessible to policymakers, promoting effective and sustainable water management measures.

Promoting International Cooperation and Knowledge Exchange

The center collaborates closely with international partners and participates in global water networks to strengthen transboundary cooperation. It supports national institutions on water-related issues through evidence-based research and practical management approaches. IC-RIVERS actively engages in transnational research projects to improve international water governance, particularly in the Danube region.

IC-RIVERS conducts high-quality research using state-of-the-art methods and technologies to ensure the sustainable use and protection of large river systems. It develops practical solutions that integrate scientific findings into water policy decision-making processes. The BOKU River Lab serves as an internationally recognized research hub, facilitating both fundamental and applied research while fostering synergies with UNESCO’s water-related initiatives.

Education and Capacity Building

The center supervises master’s and doctoral theses and provides hands-on training opportunities for students and young researchers. It expands specific training programs to enhance capacity building, improve knowledge transfer to practice, and train decision-makers. IC-RIVERS also promotes science communication through initiatives like citizen science and the integration of researchers into educational programs to raise public awareness of water-related issues.
